Easy to set up repo

Needed a private repository for a new project. Signed up for the Pro Plan. It was quick and easy. Everything worked as expected. Good service.

Pro Plan was worth it

I was looking for a good deal on version control and decided to try the Pro Plan. The cost for the features, especially the private repositories and GitHub Actions minutes, felt really reasonable. I compared it to some other services, and GitHub offered the best value for what I needed. Got it during a promo, so that made it even better. I feel like I got a lot for my money, and it's been working out great for my personal projects.

Good for teams, some minor quirks

We upgraded to the Team Plan for our small dev group a few weeks ago. The collaboration features like Branch Protection and GitHub Issues are solid, really helped us streamline our workflow. Setting up permissions was straightforward enough. My only small gripe is that the documentation for some of the more advanced features, like setting up self-hosted runners, could be a bit clearer. We figured it out eventually, but it took a bit more digging than expected. Overall, it's a valuable tool for us.

Reliable as always

I've been using GitHub for years, mostly the free tier for personal projects. Recently got the Pro Plan for a client project that needed more features, like GitHub Pages and more LFS Storage. It's consistently reliable; never had issues with uptime or performance. Just like my previous experiences, setting up new repos and inviting collaborators was smooth. They've kept things pretty consistent over time, which is why I keep coming back.

Copilot is pretty neat

I tried out the GitHub Copilot free trial last month. It was super helpful for auto-completing code snippets, especially when I was working on some repetitive stuff. Made things a lot faster than usual, and I didn't have to Google every little syntax thing. Definitely made my dev work easier, I'll probably subscribe.

Are there any annual discounts for GitHub Enterprise or teams? We're setting up a new org and trying to save some cash.

C Chris 1 month ago
I'm pretty sure enterprises get a discount if they commit to an annual plan. We got like 10-20% off when we signed up for the year, so definitely ask about that.

Yeah, for sure. Annual billing for teams and Enterprise usually has a better rate than paying monthly. It's a pretty standard thing for most software services like this.

Thinking of getting Copilot, but saw something about a free trial? Is that still a thing or was it just for new users back then?

T Troy Carter 4 weeks ago
Yeah, they usually have a free trial for Copilot. I think it's like 30 days or something. Just check their Copilot page, it should mention it.

Can confirm, I signed up for the Copilot trial a couple months ago. Still active for new users to try it out. They'll ask for payment info but won't charge until the trial ends.

I'm a student, trying to figure out if I can get Pro for free or if I need to pay. It's a bit confusing what's included.

C Colin Silva 1 month ago
Definitely check out the Student Developer Pack. If you qualify, you get Pro for free as part of that bundle, plus a bunch of other dev tools. It's a great deal.

Yeah, the Student Pack is the way to go. You just need to verify your academic status. It's not just Pro, they give you access to a ton of stuff for free or heavily discounted. Worth it.

how does github compare to gitlab these days for small teams? we're looking for something reliable with good collaboration tools.

S Sarah Silva 1 month ago
GitHub is pretty solid for collaboration, especially if your team is used to the interface. I've used both, and for most dev teams, GitHub's 'social coding' aspect often wins out. Issues and Projects are pretty decent.

Honestly, for small teams, both are really good. GitHub has better integrations with a lot of third-party tools, from my experience. GitLab's CI/CD is built-in and maybe a bit more comprehensive out of the box, but GitHub Actions is super powerful too once you get into it. Depends on what your team prioritizes.
